Product Spotlight: TreLuxe Restorative Protein Mask
Healthy curls need more than moisture. They also need strength — and that’s where protein can play an important role in your hair-care routine.
One of my favorite products to reach for when curls need a little extra support is the TreLuxe Restorative Protein Mask. If your hair has been colored, heat-styled, chemically processed, or simply feels weaker than usual, incorporating a protein treatment into your routine may help improve the way your curls look and feel.
Why Does Curly Hair Need Protein?
Your hair is primarily made up of a protein called keratin. Throughout your normal routine, your hair can experience stress from washing, styling, environmental exposure, heat, color services, and manipulation.
Protein treatments can help temporarily reinforce the hair and improve its feel, strength, and manageability.
But here’s the important part: protein isn't something every head of hair needs at every wash.
Your hair's needs can change depending on what you've been doing to it. This is why I always recommend assessing your hair before deciding what treatment to use.
When Might Your Hair Need Protein?
Here are some signs that it may be time to incorporate a protein treatment:
Your curls feel weaker or less resilient.
Your hair feels overly soft or mushy when wet.
Your curls aren't holding their shape the way they normally do.
Your hair has been colored or lightened.
You've been using heat frequently.
Your hair has experienced excessive manipulation.
Your curls need a little more structure and support.
Keep in mind that these signs aren't a diagnosis of what your hair "needs." They are simply clues to help you determine whether a protein treatment may be appropriate.
TreLuxe Restorative Protein Mask
The TreLuxe Restorative Protein Mask is a great option to have in your curly hair product collection when your hair needs a strengthening-focused treatment.
I especially like incorporating protein treatments into routines for clients whose hair has been exposed to color or other forms of chemical processing. Color-treated curls can require a little extra attention because maintaining the balance between moisture and strength is an important part of keeping them looking and feeling their best.
The key is not to automatically reach for protein every wash day. Instead, make it part of a routine that is tailored to your individual hair.
Protein + Moisture: It's About Balance
One of the biggest misconceptions I see in curly hair care is that you have to choose between protein or moisture.
You don't.
Your hair can benefit from both.
Think about your wash day as an opportunity to assess what your hair needs today. Sometimes your curls may need more moisture. Other times, they may benefit from a strengthening treatment.
The goal isn't to follow a rigid schedule just because a product says to use it every certain number of washes. Pay attention to your hair.
How I Recommend Approaching Protein Treatments
Start with your normal cleanse and then apply your protein treatment according to the product's directions. Make sure the product is distributed thoroughly throughout the hair, paying attention to your sections.
After your treatment, continue with your normal conditioning and styling routine as appropriate for your hair.
And remember: more isn't always better.
Protein treatments are a treatment step, not necessarily an everyday product. How frequently you use one should depend on your hair's condition, chemical history, styling habits, and how your hair responds.
Your Hair Isn't One-Size-Fits-All
This is why I don't believe in cookie-cutter curly hair routines.
Two people can have similar curl patterns but completely different hair needs. One person may need more moisture, while another may benefit from strengthening. Someone with fine curls may need a completely different approach than someone with thicker, denser hair.
Your routine should be tailored to your hair, your scalp, your lifestyle, and your current needs.
So before adding another product to your shelf, ask yourself:
What does my hair need today?
That question can completely change the way you approach wash day.
