Air Dry vs. Diffuse vs. Hooded Dryer: What’s the Best Way to Dry

One of the most common questions I get behind the chair is, “Should I air dry my curls or use a dryer?” The truth is that all three methods—air drying, diffusing, and sitting under a hooded dryer—have their place. However, when it comes to maintaining a healthy scalp, completely air drying your hair every wash day may not be the best option.

Let’s break down the pros and cons of each drying method.

Air Drying Your Curls

Air drying means allowing your hair to dry naturally without using any type of dryer.

Pros of Air Drying

  •  No Heat Exposure Air drying eliminates heat completely, making it a great option for those concerned about heat damage.

  •  Low Maintenance Once your products are applied, there’s nothing else you need to do.

  •  Can Create Larger Curl Clumps Many people find that air drying allows curls to stay grouped together, creating a softer, more natural finish.

Cons of Air Drying

  •  Long Dry Time Depending on your hair’s density, length, and porosity, air drying can take several hours.

  •  Less Root Volume The weight of wet hair can cause curls to dry flatter at the scalp.

  •  Potential for Frizz The longer hair remains wet, the more opportunity there is for environmental humidity to affect your style

  •  Scalp Health Concerns Your scalp should not remain wet for extended periods. While air drying occasionally is perfectly fine, I recommend drying your hair for at least 15–20 minutes with a diffuser or hooded dryer to help remove excess moisture from the scalp area.

Diffusing Your Curls

A diffuser attachment distributes airflow gently while preserving curl definition.

Pros of Diffusing

  •  Faster Dry Time Diffusing dramatically reduces drying time compared to air drying.

  •  Maximum Volume Diffusing is an excellent choice if your goal is root lift and overall fullness.

  •  Improved Longevity Styles often last longer when the hair is dried more thoroughly.

  •  Healthier Scalp Environment Reducing excess moisture at the scalp helps promote overall scalp comfort.

Cons of Diffusing

  •  Technique Matters Improper diffusing can cause frizz and disrupt curl definition.

  •  Heat Exposure Although significantly less than flat irons or curling irons, heat is still being used.

Sitting Under a Hooded Dryer

A hooded dryer provides indirect, even airflow and is one of my favorite options for curly hair.

Pros of a Hooded Dryer

  •  Hands-Free Drying You can work, read, watch TV, or relax while your hair dries.

  •  Even Drying The airflow is distributed evenly around the head, helping maintain curl definition.

  •  Reduces Frizz Because there is minimal manipulation during the drying process, many people experience less frizz than with diffusing.

  •  Great for Scalp Health A hooded dryer helps dry the scalp area while preserving the curl pattern.

Cons of a Hooded Dryer

  •  Requires Equipment Not everyone has a hooded dryer at home.

  •  Less Volume Than Diffusing While you can achieve beautiful results, you may not get as much root lift as you would with a diffuser.

My Professional Recommendation

Air drying every once in a while is completely fine. However, I do not recommend allowing your hair and scalp to remain wet for hours every wash day. My recommendation is to use a diffuser or sit under a hooded dryer for at least 15–20 minutes after styling. This helps remove excess moisture from the scalp, reduces overall drying time, and can improve the longevity of your style. You can then allow the rest of your hair to finish drying naturally if desired.

Never Go to Bed with Wet Hair

One of the biggest mistakes I see is going to bed with wet or damp hair.

Sleeping with wet hair creates a damp environment that can encourage mildew, unpleasant odors, and scalp issues. It can also flatten your curls, create excessive frizz, and shorten the lifespan of your style.

Before bed, make sure your scalp is completely dry and your hair is at least mostly dry.

Product Recommendations

No matter how you choose to dry your hair, your styling products should be selected based on your curl pattern and your desired finished look—not whether you're air drying or using a dryer.

Here are a few of my favorite product combinations:

For a Soft, Defined Finish (Wavy to Loose Curly Hair)

  •  TréLuxe Curl Reflex Styling Serum + TréLuxe Curl Defining Mousse

This lightweight combination enhances definition while maintaining movement and touchable curls.

For Maximum Definition and Long-Lasting Hold (Curly to Coily Hair)

  •  Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic + Innersense I Create Hold

This combination provides incredible definition, minimizes frizz, and offers excellent longevity throughout the week.

For Maximum Volume

  •  TréLuxe Hi! Definition Gel + TréLuxe Curl Defining Mousse

If volume is your goal, this pairing provides flexible hold while allowing you to achieve fuller roots, especially when diffused.

The key is choosing products based on the result you want—not the drying method. Whether you air dry, diffuse, or sit under a hooded dryer, the right product combination will help you achieve beautiful, healthy curls.
